Last Site Update: 07/09/2006

Most auctions today don't list all markings on the M4 bayonet.  The one area
they seem to miss often is the latch plate.  Markings can increase the value,
or add another piece to your collection.  During the war, the government
contracted latch plates out to speed up production.

Now there are at ten (10) different types that I know of,  below I will show you.

Blank
:  These are either made by the
manufacture who made the M4, or
by some unknown company.

Numbers:  One or more numbers are usually
found on the face of the plate, and it is not
known for certain what the numbers mean.
The current "best guess" seems to be that
they are batch or heat treat numbers.
 - Gary Cunningham
SP: This was the code for Standard Products.
It is actually an "S" with a "P" in it.

Thanks to Thanks Frank Trzaska for the info

The bulk of the butt plate assemblies were
manufactured on subcontract to the M4 makers
by the Standard Products Company of Port
Clinton, Ohio.  . - Gary Cunningham
"H" inside of a shield:  It was the code for the
Hemphill Company of Pawtucket Rhode Island.
It is a pretty rare marking.  I've been told it was
seen on Imperials

Thanks to Frank Trzaska for the info
I  inside of a circle:  This is the butt of the circa
1954 (may be slightly later) contract by
Imperial.  I am not sure if the circled I means
Imperial or not, but have only seen it on Imperial
made bayonets of this second contract period.

-Rare!

I have in my collection a Camillus with this
stamping. - Bill Krueger

Ordinance bomb:  So far I have no clue why it
was put on the latch plate (All other pieces had
it near the manufacture stamping).  The only
piece I've seen it on is the AKI M4 with the saw
tooth.  Speculation was this was an after war
piece for the civilian population.  I am not certain
if its on the none saw tooth AKI M4 at this time.
X:  Believed to be the Marking for the Camillus
Reproduction Factory Second M4.  Stopped
being made in the 90's.  I am working on
acquiring more info about this.

Factory Seconds were sold at Smokey Mountain
Knife works.

Thanks to Lou Cioffioni for the picture
The latch plate has  a dimple on it (possibly
the result of a hardness test?). - Gary Cunningham
Seen on Bren-Dan, Conetta, TMN, PAL, Utica, ROK,
K-M4

This latch plate has two inlayed circles on either
side of the tang.

Seen on Kingsfolk Inc

N/A

Kongsberg arsenal mark.
