field maintenance for bayonet-knives M4, M5,
M5At, and M6 and bayonet-knife scabbard
M8Al.
b.
For first echelon,
this list contains major
items authorized per tables of equipment.
c.
For second echelon,
this list contains all
items required or authorized for organiza
tional maintenance. Items having allowances
must be on hand or on order at all times in the
quantities determined in accordance with para
graph 3g.
d.
For third echelon,
this list contains all
items authorized for initial stockage for third-
echelon maintenance and supply support to sec
ond echelon.
|
e.
For fourth echelon,
this list contains those
items authorized for initial stockage for fourth-
echelon maintenance.
f.
For prices of the
Ordnance items listed
herein, see the appropriate supply manual of
the 8M 9-2 series. Prices of items that are
the responsibility of technical services other
than Ordnance may be obtained from the ap

g.
Additional
applications of items in this
manual are listed in the supply manuals of the
SM 9-3 series.

When requisitioning an
item, the request
ing agency will order the listed item. However,
the supply agencies will take necessary action
to issue the exhaust stock item until stock is
exhausted, whether it be an individual item,
kit, set, or assembly.
3.
Explanation of Columns.
a.
Source, Maintenance, and Recoverability
Code. This column
lists a code that indicates
the selection status and source of supply of the
repair part, the lowest echelon capable of in
stalling or manufacturing the repair part, and
the recoverability and expendability aspects of
the repair part. An example of this code is
P, O, F, and NR. The P indicates that the
item is a mission stockage list repair part that
is procured and stocked on a national program
basis, the O indicates that the repair part is
authorized to first and second echelons, the F
indicates that the repair part is authorized to
field maintenance, third (3d) echelon level,
and the NR indicates that the repair part is a
nonexpendable and recoverable item. When re
pair parts supply responsibility has been as
signed to a technical service other than Ord
nance, the basic number of the supply techni
cal service is listed in the first position of the
source code, for example, 11 for a Signal Corps
item. Refer to paragraph 6 for an explanation
of all codes appearing in this manual.
b.
Federal Stock Number. This
column lists
the Federal stock number which has been as
signed by the Cataloging Division, Armed For
ces Supply Support Center.
c.
Description. This column lists the Federal
item name (shown in capital letters) and any
additional description required for supply oper
ations. The abbreviation w/e (with equip
ment) when used as a portion of the nomen
clature indicates that the major item or major
combination includes all armament, equipment,
accessories, and repair
parts issued with the
item. The technical service or manufacturer's
part number is also included for reference.
d. Unit of Issue. This column lists the mini
mum quantity that will be supplied. All items
are considered as each except where the unit
of issue shown as ft., in., etc., such as bulk
materials, the requisition should indicate the
|
exact
amount that is required, for example,
6 ft.
e.
Quantity Incorporated in Unit. This
col
umn lists the quantity of each listed part in
corporated in the bayonets or scabbards. The
total quantity of each part incorporated in the
end item is listed in the part number index.
f.
Quantity Authorized. This
column lists
the quantity of the listed item authorized for
stockage by first echelon.
g.
l5-Day Maintenance Allowance per 100
Equipments.
(1)
This column lists an allowance factor
which is based on the latest mortality
data and is the estimated average
quantity to provide maintenance and,
where applicable; supply support for
100 equipments for a 15-day period
under combat conditions. A decimal
fraction system is used to express the
allowance factors.
(2)
Since the allowance factors are based
on 100 equipments, it is necessary to
compute the exact quantity author
ized. This quantity is determined by
use of a simple mathematical formula.
Resulting fractional values of 0.5 or
larger will be rounded to the next
higher whole
number.
Fractional
values below 0.5 will be rounded to
the next lower whole number.
Example
1: If the number of
equipments supported is 30 and the
allowance factor for 100 equipments
is 1.9, the following computation
would be made:
30 x 1.9
---------
== 0.57
100
Since the resulting figure is larger
than 0.5, the echelon would be author
ized a quantity of 1.
Example 2: If the number of
equipments supported is 89 and the
allowance factor for 100 equipments
is 3.4, the following computation
would be made:
89 x 3.4
----------- == 3.026
100 |
| Page
2 |
|
In this instance, the result is rounded
to the next lower whole number since
the fractional value is less than 0.5
and the echelon would be authorized
a quantity of 3.
(3)
Additional repair parts which may be
required for performing maintenance,
but are not authorized for stockage
in the prescribed load, are listed with
no allowance factors shown. These
parts are identified by an asterisk
(*) in the allowance column and are
to be requisitioned as required for
immediate use only.
(4)
The quantity determined in accord
ance with (2) above represents the
initial stockage for a 15-day period.
Major commanders will prescribe the
period of time that will be used to
compute stock age for each echelon.
(5)
Field supply units (fourth-echelon
tables of equipment supply compan
ies and posts, camps, and stations)
will compute their loads considering
the number of Ordnance units to be
supported and/or major item density,
and utilizing figures in the field main
tenance column.
(6)
In order that the Ordnance Corps at
large may be able to make equitable
distribution of the total stock of any
one item, Ordnance organization com
manders should limit their requisi
tions and stocks to the absolute mini
mum requirements that are estimated
to be necessary for each contemplated
tactical operation.
The chief Ord
nance officer of a force is responsible
that various Ordnance units in the
force do. not use the same items in
computing their stocks; for example,
if there is a grand total of 168 bay
onets and scabbards in the entire
force, each Ordnance unit in the force
should not claim the entire 168 bay
onets and scabbards as a basis for
computing its stocks. The chief Ord
nance officer must allocate, for re
pair-parts-stockage purposes, the
number of items in the force among
the various units. See supply func
|
tions
of the company, FM 9-3 and
FM 9-4.
h. Illustration. This
column indicates the
figure number of the illustration that depicts
the item. When more than one item appears
on an illustration, the item number is also. indi
cated. Items that appear on the illustrations
and in the legends of the illustrations but which
are not listed in the tabular listing are non
repair parts and are not authorized.
4.
Special Information
The
bayonet-knife M4 and bayonet-knife
scabbard M8A1 are used with the carbine. The
bayonet-knives M5 and M5A1 and bayonet
knife scabbard M8A1 are used with the cal.
.30 U. S. rifle M1. The bayonet-knife M6 and
bayonet-knife scabbard M8A1 are used with
the 7.62-mm rifle 1\114.
